I've been sending out all kinds of e-mails around the crimmigration bill. I've sent to the President, my Senators and Congressional rep (the latter falls into the "fat lotta good it does me" folder).
Today, however, I got the latest solicitation from the Republican National Committee in the mail. The language on one piece of the solicitation struck me...

| I know the Democrats will stop at nothing to expand their majorities in the U. S. House and Senate and retake control of the White House. |
And all I could think was.... well, duh. So what the hell are Republicans doing trying to play into their hands with the crimmigration bill? With that in mind, I fired off the following e-mail to Mike Duncan, the RNC chairman.

Mike Duncan, Chairman Republican National Committee Dear Mike,
Today I received in the mail the latest piece of fund raising material from the party. It was a very nice invitation to become a Charter Member for 2007.
The accompanying letter was quite flattering, telling me that I am among a select 3% of the membership. Ordinarily I'd likely open up my check book and make another contribution because I really don't want to see Democrats winning elections.
However, I also do not want Republicans who are not listening to 75% of the American public getting elected either. I am speaking, specifically, of the comprehensive Immigration bill currently churning in the Senate that is being championed by a number of prominent Republicans, including Senator McCain.
The bill, as presented from what we've seen, is a fiscal and social disaster looking for a place to happen. Amnesty, which is what this bill is at it's core, is not the answer. The hollow promises of a "path to citizenship" that requires illegal aliens to pay a fine and go back to their home country for a period are so ridiculous they are laughable. The provisions for detaining illegal aliens away from ports of entry, oh, except for Mexican nationals is a joke.
The border needs to be secured, immediately, and current law enforced before we embark on another amnesty give away program. Your job, as far as I am concerned, as the chairman of the party is to advocate strongly and passionately for that which the majority of your constituents believe in. And I believe that an overwhelming majority of Americas, judging by the most reliable polls, and certainly the lion's share of people who identify themselves as conservatives are four square against this bill.
To that end, I will not be making a contribution to the Charter Member program. In fact, I am not going to donate a single, thin dime to any Republican who supports this wrong headed bill. And if the national party can't get on track and get behind the defeat of this seriously flawed legislation, then I will be forced to re-register as either an Independent or decline to state and support candidates who reflect my views.
The Republican party, an organization I have staunchly supported and that my family has worked for since the Eisenhower era, is abandoning me and a lot of others like me in the quest, it seems, of being "Democrat Lite" as somehow being the path to electoral success. This is not the party of Lincoln, Goldwater or Reagan. The continued abandonment of key conservative principles by the party is going to lead ultimately to it's doom.
Kind regards, |
