Happy Day?

Two different times yesterday, friends I encountered wished me a "Happy Memorial Day."

Both times that struck me as odd.

I have never found anything "happy" about Memorial Day, except that I am grateful and glad that we have had patriots through the years that have been willing to sacrifice their lives for this country.

That is not what I think my acquaintenances meant, though. I think they were doing what people do for every single holiday in this country ..... blithely wish you a "happy" one.

Seems to me like Memorial Day is different, though. It got me to wondering what to say to wish others a meaningful Memorial Day, or how to respond when they wish me to have a happy one.

How do you respond about Memorial Day? Is saying "Happy Memorial Day" something that is okay? Is there a better wish or a response that is short and sweet and conveys to others that this is a holiday unlike any other?

Just wondering ..... not so sure I ever seriously thought about it before.....
