Rom 1:21-22 (ESV) - "For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools,"
Over the past year or so at my work I've been running an ongoing set of tests with a number of electronic components which has generated a pretty large body of measurement data. With all the time and materials invested in the process, this data has probably cost my employer over $100,000. Recently, one of the engineers who has looked at it put all that data into perspective. He told me that he didn't know what it meant for making actual component choices in designs on which he was working. He forced me to think in terms of tests that would enable him to make such decisions.
In the same way, if one fails to acknowledge God as the One Who designed and created this universe and the implications thereof, the vast array of knowledge that scientists, mathematicians, researchers, and historians have amassed through the millenia lacks the foundational understanding to make that knowledge fully meaningful. Without the acknowledgement of God to bring meaning and purpose to life, our technological and scientific advances become toys that clutter our lives or "bright, shiny, objects" that mock our inability to find meaning and purpose.
